Restarting the hospitality industry: tips for the perfect customer experience

Enjoying a cool drink in a restaurant or having a relaxing time-out in a hotel. We all have been waiting for this for such a long time. Now it is possible again. Many hospitality facilities have taken hygiene precautions and have placed dispenser systems for hand disinfection directly at entrances. However, the wrong product can dampen or spoil a guest’s experience.

Hygiene and prevention in the hospitality industry: keeping the pandemic under control

Hand hygiene plays a crucial role in hospitality industry. Because according to the World Health Organization, 80 percent of all diseases are transmitted by the hands. This makes it all the more important to pay attention to hand sanitation in places where large numbers of people come together.

That is why dispenser systems for hand sanitizing are more and more commonly found at entrances and exits, in washrooms, in conference and dining rooms in the catering and hotel industry.

Sticky and pungent smelling substances spoil hand disinfection for many guests

Ideally, the product offered is clinically tested and leaves nothing but a pleasantly well-cared-for feeling on the hands. That is the theory so far. In many cases, however, the reality unfortunately is quite different. The gels or watery solutions that drip out of dispenser systems smell strongly of alcohol or glue and accompany guests throughout the whole day because a moist, sticky film remains on their hands after application.

Often these are no-name products that were produced in large quantities at the beginning of the pandemic by manufacturers without expert status in the field of hand sanitising. Unfortunately, these may contain inferior ingredients which do not comply with the existing standards and regulations. Consumer protection authorities throughout Europe have tested various hand sanitising gels for their composition and efficacy and have withdrawn a large number of the products from the market, because they have classified them as questionable or even risky. In some hotels or restaurants, however, these products might still be used out of a lack of information.

Guests in gastronomy or hotels give hand disinfection a wide berth

So who's surprised if guests in restaurants or hotels give hand sanitisers a wide berth after such a one-time bad experience? But this behaviour is risky, because it increases the chance of infection.

The reason: germs can easily be transmitted by touching surfaces in restaurants or hotels. There are many surfaces that are touched by dozens of guests one after the other. Real reservoirs of germs form on these. These include, above all, cold or flu viruses or bacteria that cause gastrointestinal diseases.
